Downing LLP invests £5m in shipping business

Venture capital trusts and enterprise investment schemes fund manager Downing LLP has made a £5m investment in Garthcliff Shipping Ltd to support the latter's acquisition of its first container vessel.

The ship – the Sentosa – is a gearless Bangkok Max container vessel that is capable of transporting 1,200 containers.

The Sentosa currently operates in Europe shipping containers around the Mediterranean and Spanish coastline.

Conbulk Shipmanagement will provide the technical management of the vessel.

The Garthcliff board is currently being advised by technical, commercial and corporate management experts, including Andrew Bell.

Jonathan Boss, partner at Downing LLP, said: “Our work with Garthcliff Shipping is a brilliant example of the type of results that VCTs [venture capital trusts] and EIS [enterprise investment schemes] can deliver when it comes to supplying ‘patient capital’ to smaller-scale UK businesses.

“We’re extremely pleased to have been able to support Garthcliff in the acquisition of its first vessel – a milestone in [its] journey as a business.

“This is also an exciting development for Downing too as we make our first investment in UK shipping.

“Extensive due diligence on both the individual investment opportunity and the sector revealed to us that, following a cyclical low point in 2016, the container vessel sector has begun to show signs of recovery.

“Industry experts are now forecasting continued growth over the next three years, making this the ideal time for us to invest.”
