During my time in the industry, I have noticed positive changes and feel that we are on the right path, as there has been a significant increase in females within the industry and in senior positions since 2018. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of representation at board level.
The bridging and development finance industry must actively go after female talent, come up with clear career paths, and encourage genuine inclusive initiatives.By being strong supporters of role models, mentors, transparency and empowerment, the specialist finance industry can work towards a more gender-balanced future.
- Leaders in the specialist finance industry celebrate International Women's Day by sharing advice
- 'Stand up for what you believe in and put yourself forward'
- 'Everyone within the industry has a duty to combat the negative behaviours and attitudes that still exist'
The industry can be intimidating, particularly for younger girls who are just starting out on their careers. However, instead of narrowing yourself into a tiny box so you fit into a male-dominated environment, I would advise women to allow themselves to be bold, take more risks and speak up.
I also think it’s helpful to find a mentor who can help you navigate your way through the industry. We can overthink and get emotionally invested in situations which aren’t that important, but a mentor can help gain perspective and ensure you focus on your goals.
