Ramsbottom Cricket Club in Bury is hoping to raise £10,000 to restore its Acre Bottom ground after it was flooded on Boxing Day.

The campaign has so far raised £4,810 at the time of publication, while the total cost of the repairs is estimated to be around £70,000.

Committee member John Fox said: “We are setting up a crowdfunding account for any cash donations but I feel that as people are constantly harangued by requests from JustGiving-style accounts these days that it would be stupid to limit ourselves to just seeking cash support.

“In order to achieve this goal I would ask you to beg, borrow and steal (well maybe not steal) and do whatever you can - call in favours, blackmail family members and ask for support from any organisation who might look kindly at our current plight and be able to pledge assistance to the club.”

The club, which was formed in 1845, has received support from the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Lancashire Cricket Board, Lancashire Cricket Club and Bury District Association.

The damage was caused after the river Irwell burst its banks dumping at least 40 tonnes of mud and silt on the playing surface.

Part of the ground’s nets, installed five years ago for £50,000 had also been ripped apart.
