Harworth CEO joins the LEP board




Owen Michaelson, chief executive of the Harworth Group, has been appointed to the board of the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for the Sheffield City Region..

The £400m land and property regeneration company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and responsible for a number of key developments in the region, including the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Waverley, Rotherham; Gateway 36 in the Dearne Valley in Barnsley; and Torne Park, the former Rossington Colliery site in Doncaster.

Owen has held non-executive director appointments in non-governmental organisations and the charitable sector.

He has worked with a number of public bodies and Whitehall departments, including the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy; the Pension Protection Fund; the Coal Authority and the Treasury.

Owen has also been a trustee and director of the Tall Ships Youth Trust, the North West Forest Trust and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

The LEP for the Sheffield City Region has seen the creation of 37,000 jobs across the area in the past two years and an economy which has grown to an annual £31bn.


Other new board members recently announced are:

  • Laura Bennett – a Sheffield-based specialist in entrepreneurship and digital technology
  • Alexa Greaves – chief executive of AAG, the IT managed services company in Barlborough, Chesterfield
  • Neil MacDonald – a finance director in international engineering industries
  • Richard Stubbs – senior manager in national health and innovation organisations in Yorkshire and Humber.

They will be supported by former members Chris Scholey and Simon Carr.

Professor Chris Husbands, vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, has agreed to be co-opted to the board to help lead on skills and employability.

The board members of the LEP are due to approve a new inclusive industrial strategy that will set out the blueprint for economic growth over the next 10 years.
