'The power of women coming together and achieving great things has the potential to shape a better industry'

Every year, the specialist finance industry's celebrations on International Women's Day seem to be getting bigger and more prominent, highlighting the increasing success of numerous women and the progress being made towards gender parity.

More individuals and firms are now actively promoting women's achievements and encouraging them to pursue their ambitions and aspirations, irrespective of the barriers they may face.

Overall, the gender pay gap among full-time employees in the UK is currently 8.3%, but this figure has been slowly declining over time. Although women have historically held fewer senior-level positions, there has been a significant representational shift, with female professionals now accounting for 40% of top leadership roles in FTSE 100 companies. These developments signify vital societal progress that is increasingly filtering down to benefit women in the finance sector.

While women's achievements are a testament to evolving attitudes, some of the most inspiring examples involve collaboration — when women come together, they not only bring their individual strengths and talents, but also amplify their collective impact.

Look at football in the last year: a sport which has been almost exclusively male, was shown to thrive with female participation and leadership. The Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s Euro Championship success has captured and engaged a new audience, inspired a young generation of girls to take part in, and made something accessible and relatable for so many who had previously felt excluded. These achievements in football, served as a powerful reminder that women can take on positions that have previously or predominantly been held by men and can carve their own path — and men will often cheer them on too when they do.

This concept is one of the key advancements that I have witnessed in this industry: women are increasingly supporting each other, celebrating each other’s individual successes, meeting to collaborate as a team, and uniting to overcome obstacles and achieve their career goals.

The community of successful women provides a nurturing environment for women to achieve their ambitions as a team, as well as offering a forum for new female entrants to find relatable experiences and gain mentorship to overcome barriers they may face.

In my experience, I have found that men are also supporting female collaboration and are encouraging it as well. Ever since the 30% Club — which campaigned for minimum 30% female representation in boardrooms — gained prominence, we have known that professional engagement involving male and female talent across all levels brings numerous benefits to businesses as a whole.

I believe this is the key to making progress and driving change in the future. The power of women coming together and achieving great things, despite the hurdles and resistance to change, has the potential to shape a better industry for all stakeholders.
