International news presenter Edward Law, 41, has been jailed for 18 months. The scam was carried out by the Chinese news presenter and his brother William, 43, a qualified mortgage broker who was jailed for four years.
Prosecutor James Fletcher told the court that the duo hoped to score a total of just under £3.38 million but only managed to rake in half of the sum at £1.69 million.
It was heard that the brothers commissioned the help of Marius Cesna, 35, as the named person on mortgages for homes in Northlands, Russ Hill, Horley and Copthorne Road in Felbridge, near East Grinstead, Sussex. Cesna, a Lithuanian builder was jailed for two years.
Judge, Mr Recorder John Anthony Blair-Gould said Edward and his brother sent fake applications to HSBC, Santander and Lloyds regarding two Surrey properties.
Southwark Crown Court heard that William, husband and a father of two, was the brains behind the plan. The court heard that William created the scheme so the profits could be used to pay for his brother’s cancer treatment.
Edward, also known as Sen Luo, presented for the flagship business news program Biz China on the CCTV network in 2008. Edward Law was jailed previously for 12 months for a separate charge that was uncovered by police during a fraud inquiry.
