p>A bank worker has been sentenced to 28 months in prison following a £276,000 cash fraud.

Mark Cooney, 26, of Celandine Gardens, Plymouth, was sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court after admitting to fraud while working for Halifax and then for Lloyds Bank.

The court heard that Cooney gained access to six accounts between April 2013 and March 2015 including those of two vulnerable, elderly victims.

He regularly withdrew money until an audit check revealed irregular payments which also showed Cooney had destroyed documentation in an attempt to cover his tracks.

Kathy Taylor, District Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) South West, said working as a bank employee Cooney was trusted by his victims.

“They expected him to deal with them fairly and honestly but [he] targeted them because he thought he could take advantage of them,” said Kathy.

“His gambling addiction led him to commit ever greater fraud, meaning he could no longer cover his tracks and he must now face the consequences of his crimes.”

The CPS will now look to recover that money through the Proceeds of Crime Act.
